Family Programs (All Ages)

DYF understands that T1D can affect every member of the family which is why we invite parents, siblings, type 1s, and grandparents to come to diabetes camp. Our family camp programs tailor to all those affected by combining education, fun, and support in a camp environment.

We recommend family programs for any family desiring support. We also highly recommend it as the first stop for families new to T1D and DYF, as they provide a great introduction to camp and provides education for all, and for families with young kids who are not yet eligible for our independent camps. Our main family camp sessions are offered over the summer at Bearskin Meadow Camp, and we do shortened weekend family retreats during the spring and fall in different camp facilities in the San Francisco Bay Area. After Family Camp, you and your family will walk away refreshed, happy, and with a new view of what life with diabetes can be.

Family Camps 1 and 2 are for families with children ages 0-17 with T1D.

2025 Dates: July 13-18, July 20-25

We know that diabetes affects the whole family unit and we are here to help! Family Camp is perfect for families who want to learn and grow together in their diabetes journey. Kids are supervised in typical camp activities while parents get the opportunity to receive top-notch diabetes education and support from other families going through similar challenges. Whether you are 2 months old or 95, Family Camp is the place for you! Make Family Camp your annual family get-a-way for a fun, adventurous, inspirational re-charge in a gorgeous outdoor environment.

Set against the backdrop of the stunning Sequoia National Forest, Family Camp provides unparalleled diabetes support and community for the entire family. Family Camp at BMC offers an opportunity for families to relax, have fun, and learn about T1D together. During the mornings, kids with diabetes and their siblings go with their peers and camp counselors to fun activities such as archery, swimming, sports, diabetes education, and art. Our staff is trained in T1D management and most have diabetes themselves, so your kiddos will be in great hands!

While kids are off having a blast, parents and adults are in diabetes education sessions led by our amazing healthcare professionals. Session topics range from managing the emotional trauma and ongoing hardships of life with T1D, to tips and tricks for daily management, to sick day care, and more. In addition, before every meal our medical team will be available for “insulin line” where you can discuss changing insulin needs based on carbohydrate intake and activity levels. A huge benefit of Family Camp is having full access to an endocrinologist and diabetes care team for an entire week!

In the afternoons families will be together and can enjoy trips to nearby Kings Canyon and Sequoia National Parks, do activities on camp, and spend quality time together. In the evenings families participate in a range of fun group programming including campfires, night hikes, talent shows, a camp dance, and more!
