DYF Family Programs 2022

T1D is a family affair, which is why we invite parents, siblings, type 1s, and grandparents to come to diabetes camp. Family Camps are for families who have one or more children under the age of 18 with type 1 diabetes. We recommend family camp as the first stop for families new to T1D and DYF as they provide a great introduction to camp and provides education for all, and for families with young kids who are not yet eligible for our independent camps. Our main family camp sessions are offered over the summer at Bearskin Meadow Camp, and we do shortened weekend family retreats during the Spring and Winter in different camp facilities in the San Francisco Bay Area.

P.S – If you’re a family who likes adventuring in the outdoors, check out our Family Adventure Programs!

Family Retreat

Our Family Retreat weekends are located in the Bay Area and they are the perfect opportunity to experience a dose of Family Camp closer to home.

These weekend family retreats are an amazing mid-year diabetes refresher and provide a fun getaway. Weekend family retreats offer the same benefits of Family Camp but in a shortened timeframe and with easier accessibility to the San Francisco Bay Area.

Please note the following for Spring Retreat 2022: In recognition of the limited diabetes camp options in the past two years, we will prioritize newly diagnosed families (diagnosed in 2019-2022) and those with kids with T1D ages 10 and under. If you do not fit those criteria but are interested in attending, please email us at info@dyf.org and we will circle back with you at the end of February if there are still spaces available. Family Camps

Family Camps 1 and 2 are for families with children ages 0-17 with T1D, while Family Camp Flipped is for families with a parent with T1D.

Family Camp at BMC offers an opportunity for families to relax, have fun, and learn about T1D together. During the mornings, kids with diabetes and their siblings go with their peers and camp counselors to fun activities such as archery, swimming, sports, diabetes education, and art. Our staff is trained in T1D management and most have diabetes themselves, so your kiddos will be in great hands! While kids are off having a blast, parents are in diabetes education sessions led by our amazing healthcare professionals. Session topics range from managing the emotional trauma and ongoing hardships of life with T1D, to tips and tricks for daily management, to sick day care, and more. In addition, before every meal our medical team will be available for “insulin line” where you can discuss changing insulin needs based on carbohydrate intake and activity levels. A huge benefit of Family Camp is having full access to an endocrinologist and diabetes care team for an entire week! In the afternoons families will be together and can enjoy trips to nearby Kings Canyon and Sequoia National Parks, do activities on camp, and spend quality time together. In the evenings families participate in a range of fun group programming including campfires, night hikes, talent shows, a camp dance, and more! (See Sample Program Schedules Here)

2022 Covid-19 Guidelines at DYF Programs:

In respect for your family’s health and safety, all DYF staff and volunteers will be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 and we encourage eligible participants to do the same. Our COVID-19 policies for 2022 programs will be made with current information from the CDC, state and local health authorities, and under the leadership of our Healthcare Professional Advisory Board. Given the unique threat that COVID-19 poses to our community, we will likely require vaccination against COVID-19 for all participants age 18 and older. When full FDA approval is granted to younger groups (as opposed to emergency use authorization, EUA), we anticipate requiring vaccination for those younger age groups as well. Specific guidelines and requirements will be tailored to each program and released at least 30 days prior to the program start date. Should you have any concerns about these guidelines once they are released and you no longer feel comfortable attending a DYF program, we will provide you with a full refund minus the $50 non-refundable deposit and the corresponding processing fee.
