As the COVID-19 pandemic continues, we at DYF are acutely aware of the unique challenges this past year has presented to our youth. DYF is rooted in community and togetherness; while we are incredibly grateful for moments of camaraderie found over Zoom, we cannot ignore that pandemic-related isolation weighs heavy on many.
In recognition of this lack of connectedness and in alignment with our mission, it is the decision of DYF’s staff, Board of Directors, and Healthcare Professional Advisory Board to move forward with plans for in-person, overnight camp programs for summer 2021. We are confident in our ability to craft a modified camp experience for our campers and staff that will minimize COVID-related risks while maximizing opportunities for friendships, fun, and diabetes pride.
As thrilled as we are by this opportunity, there remain a number of factors outside of our control that could derail our plans. The California Public Health Department has granted permission for overnight camp operation with modifications starting June 1st in counties located in the Red, Orange, and Yellow tiers. The guidelines to which we must adhere for these modifications have yet to be released, although we expect them in early April. In the event that we are not able to operate camp based on Fresno county’s tier status, or should the guidelines be impossible to adhere, camp will be cancelled and our cancellation policy will take effect.
Assuming we can operate, we will offer a modified camp schedule with streamlined programs and limited session capacities. Sessions will be available for campers ranging in age from 7-17 at Bearskin Meadow Camp only; in person family camp sessions, Adult Retreat, and Camp de los Niños* will not be offered this summer. This schedule will grant access to the maximum number of campers while maintaining the fullest control of their safety. We wish we could offer every program as we usually would, and extend our sincerest apologies to those who are unable or ineligible to attend this summer’s sessions. Thank you for understanding and for practicing flexibility and patience.
*We are looking forward to hosting Camp de los Niños again at YMCA Camp Loma Mar June 27-July 2, 2022!
Staff applications will open on April 1st. Just as is true for campers and families, staffing will look different from previous years. Learn more about staff applications and hiring on our website.
We welcome all questions and would love to discuss which program would be the best fit for your camper. Please reach out to us at (925) 680-4994 or email us with programmatic questions and concerns.
Looking forward to seeing you under the Sierra stars in Summer 2021!
