In light of the severe California drought, Bearskin Meadow Camp has instituted strict water conservation measures to best use the water available. BMC is dependent on ground water through a well system, and our goal is to maintain an adequate supply so that all programs run as scheduled.

Below are some things you can expect to see and experience at BMC this summer to help conserve water.

  • Three Minute Showers: Timers are being installed on all shower heads at camp.  These timers will allow water to run for three minutes and then shut off.
  • Showers Every Three Days and Pool Daily: Participants and staff will be assigned a shower group and be given designated shower days.  Each group will be asked to shower no more than every three days as per California Health Department Standards. Pool time will be assigned for Kids & Teen Campers each day. The pool will also be open to families daily during Family Camp.  Hand washing will still be strongly encouraged!
  • Toilet Flushing: We will utilize the “if it’s yellow let it mellow, if it’s brown flush it down” method. We ask that several people use the toilet for urine before flushing.
  • Lysol Wipes Instead of Rags/Water: Campers and staff will use disinfectant wipes to clean tables after meals. Staff will also use a secondary sanitizing spray.
  • Modified Menu: We will modify our menu to reduce the number of dishes and water used to prepare meals.  For example, our traditional scrambled eggs and hot oatmeal in the morning will be swapped out for cereal, toast, and baked hard boiled eggs.
  • All Plastic Utensils/Paper Goods: We will continue to use paper plate, bowls, cups, and plastic utensils.
  • Ice Machines: The ice/water machines will be turned off in the dining hall.  We will still have plenty of drinking water on hand.
  • Grass:  We have opted not to water the lawn this summer.
  • Recycled Water: We will recycle water as much as possible.  For example, shower water will be caught in buckets and used to put out campfires.
  • Drinking Water: We are taking donations of water (bottles, gallons jugs – whatever you supply, we will use).  We will use this water for drinking, cooking and other water-required activities.  We will recycle all bottles.

WAYS YOU CAN HELP AND HELPFUL TIPS

  • Pack some wet wipes/baby wipes for a quick wipe down each day to help your child feel fresh (to be disposed of in the garbage).
  • Dry shampoo is a great option for non-shower days.
  • Talk to your child about helping conserve water at camp and in general. Please develop habits of turning off water while brushing teeth, washing face and practice taking quick showers.
  • Bring a donation of water with you when dropping off your child at camp. (Please, no donations at the bus locations). Please see below for more information.

BMC has an Amazon Wish List with many budget relieving items.  Water donations and disinfectant wipes are the most relevant (though all items are needed). Please visit www.amazon.com and search for DYF under “Wishlist”.

DONATION SHIPMENTS: If you wish to donate water please have it shipped to BMC directly (address below).  We are UNABLE to accept any donations at bus stops due to space limitations.
