2015 Camp Magic Awaits...

2015 Camp Magic Awaits…

Program Fee Options

  • Partial Fee:  The MAJORITY of families select this option. Thanks to donations from individuals, corporations, community organizations and through fundraising events, DYF is happy to offer a subsidized fee. Families can also create a custom fundraising page at www.firstgiving.com/dyf if they’d like to help cover the difference between the Partial and Actual fees and send more kids to camp.

  • Actual Fee: This fee represents all costs associated with operating the program, including insurance, utilities, full-time and seasonal personnel, staff training, food, program supplies, transportation, facilities and maintenance.

  •  Scholarship: Financial assistance is available to families who qualify, and enables those with hardships to pay as little as the deposit to attend any program. You can also create their own fundraising page at www.firstgiving.com/dyf to raise the camp fee.

In ten short weeks, we experienced hundreds of diabetes firsts, thousands of finger pokes and injections, endless carbohydrate counted meals and snacks carb, late nights, early mornings, and an incredible amount of life changing moments. Please continue to help us by completing your surveys sent via Survey monkey over the past four weeks. We need your feedback! Help us secure funding and provide life changing programs but letting us know areas for improvement and what we did well.

A Family Journey – A Testimonial for Bearskin Meadow Camp http://dyf.org/testimonial/ http://dyf.org/testimonial/#comments Thu, 05 Sep 2013 21:10:48 +0000 http://dyf.org/?p=4981 A FAMILY JOURNEY
By Caron Gaydon

Nearly 15 years ago, our daughter, Taylor, was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the ripe old age of 16 months. While in the hospital with her diagnosis, we discovered that we were expecting our second child. Within a couple of months, the stress of the diagnosis played a large role in causing me to experience preterm labor which led my medical team to put me on strict bed rest for the remainder of the pregnancy. Obviously, we were witnessing how a diagnosis of type 1 diabetes can affect an entire family in multiple ways. This played a large role (along with my daughter’s young age) in our decision to start attending diabetes family camps once our son, Jackson, was born. We attended Camp Seale Harris in Alabama for the first time when the kids were only 2 years and 3 months old. Everyone at the camp pitched in to assist us with the young kids so that so that we could get as much help from camp as possible. It was SO needed.
Shortly thereafter, we moved to California and attended family camps each year including Bearskin Meadow as of 2003. The magic of Bearskin played a large role in where we are today and made it possible for us to get through the years with all of the challenges that come with raising a child with type 1. My husband and I were always prepared for the extra challenges that came with each phase of child development thanks to the support of our fellow campers and the Bearskin staff. Today, Taylor is proud of her diabetes and has a sense of accomplishment about achieving her goals with the extra challenge of thinking for her pancreas 24/7! She takes pride in her seniority in living with type 1 longer than most of her counselors or peers since she sees this as a challenge that she has been able to overcome. Meanwhile, she has learned how to cope with the diabetes and everyday life with a sense of humor that allows her to laugh at herself (and her parents). I don’t believe that she would be the outgoing, vivacious, and proud person that she is today without her experiences (and connections) from Bearskin. She feels that she is privileged to belong to a special society and doesn’t even want a cure for diabetes if it means no diabetes camps!
For the rest of the family, it connected us to Taylor and her condition and brought us together as a family. We share the emotions, challenges, and chores of living with type 1 diabetes and it taught us that we can get through anything as long as we have each other. Most important, we learned how to work the diabetes into the equation of our lives as just a factor rather than as the only variable. Most important, Bearskin taught us that we are not alone. This summer will be our first year without family camp since Taylor’s diagnosis because Taylor is starting a leadership-in-training program as a future counselor. We are thrilled to watch the magic of Bearskin continue.

Hey there! DYF is Joining the Blogging World! http://dyf.org/blog_04-02-13/ http://dyf.org/blog_04-02-13/#comments Thu, 28 Feb 2013 23:27:22 +0000 http://dyf.org/?p=4404 Post Date: April 2, 2013    Author: DYF

The mission of the Diabetic Youth Foundation (DYF) is to improve the quality of life for children, teens and families affected by diabetes. We provide education and recreation programs within a supportive community, encouraging personal growth, knowledge and independence.

In order to meet our mission we are unable to go it alone. It takes a village to produce the life changing programs that have helped thousands of children and families for over 75 years. This blog is dedicated to showcasing the fundraising efforts of the amazing individuals and families who have set aside a day for DYF.

Be on the look-out for our DYF DAY family showcase. Check out what others are doing to help raise funds for the DYF programs we all love!

Watch…Get inspired…learn how you can help spread the DYF magic!
