Year-Round Programs The Diabetic Youth Foundation offers more than just summer camp programs! We keep the Bearskin Magic going all year long by providing many year-round programs for children, teens and families affected by diabetes. Our programs fall into four categories: Kids Club for children only (no parents allowed!); Teen Series for teens only (no parents allowed!); Family Programs & Education Seminars, for families of all ages; and Community Programs for members of the community, including health care professionals, school personnel and more. KIDS CLUB PROGRAMS Surf Day in Pacifica (Back to the Top) Come on out for a day of frolicking in the ocean, playing in the surf, and receiving one-on-one surf instruction with other kids with diabetes. Parents stay on the beach and chat with other parents, while kids hit the waves in wet suits with surf instructors and counselors. Equipment and instructors provided. Snacks provided.
Super Buddy Weekend (Back to the Top) This is an opportunity of a lifetime to bring a friend without diabetes to camp! No parents allowed! This weekend is all about campers with diabetes, sharing their experiences about diabetes with their friends and having loads of fun at camp. Activities include swimming, nature, arts & crafts, sports & games, campfire (with S’mores, of course!), and our traditional Camp Party & Dance! Don't forget your Super Hero Costume! Cost $ 275.00 per Super Buddy pair. CANCELLED FOR 2009
Mini Camp Weekend (Back to the Top) Your child couldn't make kids camp at Bearskin Meadow Camp this year? Come on out to YMCA Camp Jones Gulch in La Honda for a mini camp experience like no other! This long weekend is great for children with diabetes to have tons of fun at camp! Activities include campfire with s'mores, swimming, arts & crafts, nature hikes, sports & games, our traditional Camp Party dance, and more! Don't forget to pack your favorite Hoedown outfit!!
Bay Area Ice Skating Party (Back to the Top) We welcome children with and without diabetes to our annual Bay Area Ice Skating Party! This is a great night for parents to do some holiday shopping or to spend some time enjoying a quiet evening while their children are treated to a night of skating and fun together. Kids skate and dine the evening away with Bearskin Meadow Camp counselors and DYF's Year Round Volunteers. Dinner provided.
DYF Tweens Take Tahoe (Back to the Top) Come one, come all to the mountains in Tahoe. Every year we take a group of Tweens to Tahoe Donner Ski Hill for two days of skiing, snowboarding, bonding, fun and adventures, under the close guidance and supervision of Bearskin Meadow Camp staff. We leave Friday at 2:00 PM from Concord, CA and return Sunday evening at 6:00 PM. Beginners to advanced welcome. Transportation is provided. A popular program, this weekend fills fast! Cost $250. Cost includes everything but rentals. Rentals must be obtained prior to departing for the trip.
Fresno Sleepover (Back to the Top) DYF's Fresno Sleepover is all about having fun together at the Discovery Center! Children with diabetes and their siblings are invited to DYF's popular slumber party with Dr. Mary Simon, DYF’s Medical Director, at the Discovery Center in Fresno. Designed to give parents a respite from a night of diabetes, this program brings together kids in a dynamic atmosphere of learning, laughter and support. Includes a Saturday night dinner, campfire, astronomer lead star party, tour of the Discovery Center, and the opportunity to bond with Bearskin Meadow Camp counselors and Dr. Mary!
Come on out for a day of experiencing the ocean, and receiving one on one surf instruction with other teens with diabetes. Parents stay on the beach and chat with other parents, while teens hit the waves in wet suites with experienced Surf Camp Pacifica instructors and Bearskin Meadow Camp counselors. FAMILY PROGRAMS & EDUCATION SEMINARS Family Education Retreat (Back to the Top) Families with kids of all ages with diabetes, and siblings, are welcome to our annual Family Education Weekend Retreat. In the mornings, parents spend time in diabetes education while campers rotate through a number of organized activities including nature, sports & games, diabetes education, arts & crafts and much more! In the afternoon families can participate in a number of different activities including the popular ropes course, arts and crafts, basketball and of course our annual game of Parents & Campers vs. Staff kickball game. We can’t forget about our great campfire with S’Mores and our annual Family Camp Party & Dance! Diabetes education includes topics such as: hypoglycemia, insulin injections, beginning pumping, pumping for advanced pumpers, dealing with sick days, school issues, diabetes and the family, ages and stages of diabetes development and much more. Families should arrive at 4:00 PM on Friday and depart after lunch on Sunday. Cost $175.00 per parent and child ($50.00 per each additional person over three years of age), covers all weekend expenses. Scholarships available! CANCELLED FOR 2009
Kids Kamp in Partnership with University California SF DYF has once again been invited to run Kids Camp at the Annual UCSF Pediatric Diabetes Symposium on TBD 2010 . This fantastic and informative day is open to families with children with diabetes, health care providers and the community at large. The event is from 9 am - 3 pm, free and located at the UCSF Mission Bay Conference Center in San Francisco. Mi Familia y la Diabetes Weekend at Camp Arroyo (Back to the Top) Este programa esta diseñado para las familias que hablan Español. Padres y niños vendrán a Camp Arroyo para el fin de semana lleno de diversión, educación, y sorpresas. Padres atenderán clases de diabetes con doctores, enfermeras y educadores de diabetes mientras los niños participan en programas. Medico y Personal: El programa sera conducido por la directora medico, Dra. Mary Simon, Dra. Marlene Rodriguez, y el equipo medico de Bearskin Meadow Camp. Cost: $25 para la familia de cinco.
COMMUNITY PROGRAMS Building Diabetes Teams at School Conferences (Back to the Top) DYF's Building Diabetes Teams in Schools Conferences are day-long programs for school personnel. DYF brings together school nurses, administrators, teachers and guidance counselors in a series of supportive, structured seminars addressing the complexities and specific needs of caring for students of all ages with diabetes. Conference participants learn how to create a positive team-based environment in schools to support children and teens affected by the condition. This day-long conference focuses on educating school personnel in the needs of students with diabetes. Informative lectures and hands-on workshops illustrate the fundamentals of building a strong diabetes team to support children and teens as tackle the daily challenges of managing diabetes at school. DYF staff and health care professional volunteers address a wide range of topics from insulin delivery, glucose monitoring, diabetes plan development, classroom management and much more! Encourage your school nurse or teacher to attend! 6 CEUs are offered for this program. Cost: $50 per participant
